Killing of George Floyd Trial Begins

Friday, September 11th

Defendants in George Floyd Trial
Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and Alexander Keung.

The pretrial hearing began Friday, September 11th.  The defense requested the four defendants be trialed separately, this may indicate that one or more of them plan to testify against the others.   The prosecution indicated that multiple trials would cause additional stress on the family and was not warranted.  The four defendants are Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and Alexander Keung.

The defense team has filed a motion to dismiss the case and if not they requested a change of venue be granted.  The judge indicated that he would not rule on either of these until next week.

Evidence

The judge also ruled the defense could not us George Floyd’s prior arrest records in the trial.  This could lead to a possible mistrial as the defense team plans on claiming that Floud swallowed a large amount of drugs while being arrested that led to his death.

Barred from the Case

The judge also barred Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman from the case after he met with the corner privately.  The judge indicated it was “sloppy” for Freeman to meet with the corner and are now considered witnesses.

Venue Change

The request to move the trial to another venue or city was met with resistance from the production who stated that the killing of Floyd was so well pubicied that moving it would do no good.
